Seminyak will play host to a religious celebration of puppetry and the arts next month.

SEMINYAK, INDONESIA, August 12, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A spiritual festival with a difference - Tumpek Wayang - will take place on the doorsteps of Seminyak hotels at the start of next month.

The occasion, which is one of many religious celebrations which are held on the paradise island of Bali every single month, is a day on which local artists - and particularly puppeteers - are celebrated.

Tumpek Wayang occurs at different times each year, with the 2010 festivities set to go ahead on September 4th 2010. Tourists who are lucky enough to visit Bali at the time of the event will see local Hindus gather around shrines and temples to honour the day.

Leather puppets will be removed from their boxes and placed in a variety of different positions, as if they were actually in the middle of giving a performance, notes BaliBagus.com.

However, this day is dedicated to the whole arts community, not just to puppetry. Although Sanghyang Iswara is the Hindu god of puppetry, the Tumpek Wayang ceremony is designed to ensure that the pursuit of art continues for ever, both on Bali and across the world.

Locals believe it is unlucky for a baby to be delivered on this date, so a special ritual must also be performed to protect any newborns.
