Attracting literally tens of thousands of locals and foreigners every year, this event marks the eighth day of the fourth moon in the Chinese calendar.

Coinciding with the local celebration of Buddha's birthday places it right in the middle of one of Hong Kong's most festive weeks, a seven-day festival that begins on May 21th, 2010; the city undergoes a massive transformation during the event.

Finding Hong Kong accommodation is difficult during the Cheung Chau Bun Festival, especially if you are trying to find a room close to the actual island where the festival takes place. In addition to the lion and dragon dances that traditionally occur, attendees should be aware that the first three days of the festival include a completely vegetarian menu. This includes all of the island's restaurants as well as the local McDonald's, which even goes so far as taking meat off the menu and instead sells mushroom burgers.

Participants can expect to see the burning of paper effigies as the King of Ghosts is set on fire at midnight, and the centrepiece of everyone's attention will be the 60-foot giant bamboo towers covered in buns.

One of the local traditions is bun-snatching where young men climb up the towers, and see how many buns they can grab on the way down.
