BALI, INDONESIA, April 23, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Anyone staying in Bali hotels at the end of next month may want to head to Borobudur for the annual Waisak celebrations.

On May 27th, Indonesia marks the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha with its Waisak festivities.

Countries such as Thailand and Cambodia hold similar celebrations under variations of the same name.

The annual spectacle on Bali is worth visiting if you are staying on the island because it comprises of a five-mile pilgrimage of monks wearing bright yellow and orange ceremonial robes.

All the worshipers walk from Mendut to the sitting Buddha on Borobudur. The procession is quite a sight to behold as all of those involved carry candles and throw flower petals along the route.

The Buddha at Borobudur is the largest in the world and worth a visit on any trip to Bali. The temple complex in which it is located was built in the eighth and ninth centuries and is a designated Unesco World Heritage Site.

Walking through the different levels of the temple, the procession of monks will pass stone carvings which represent the Buddhist cosmos and present a path through life, which eventually leads to Nirvana.

The walk begins during the day and culminates with a moonlight ceremony of prayers when candles are lit and the monks meditate.
