Christians will be able to celebrate Ascension Day on a holiday to Bali.
BALI, INDONESIA, March 31, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Although the majority of the Balinese population is Hindu, many of the Christian religious festivals are still observed on the island.
One of these is Ascension Day, which falls on May 13th this year, approximately one month after Easter.
The date is treated as a public holiday on Indonesian island, which means that anyone staying in accommodation in Bali will find it easy to celebrate in their own way.
According to the Bible, Ascension Day marks when Jesus was taken up to heaven to sit at God's right hand.
Bali has a modest Christian community, with the Protestant Christian Church on the island the main focus of the religion's attention.
According to the Uniting Church in Australia, which works in partnership with the organisation in Bali, Christianity has approximately 20,000 followers on the island, out of a population of 3.7 million.
The first Christian missionaries arrived on the island in 1873 from Holland and managed to convert a small number of families. However, the uptake of the religion among the wider population has been slow.
Hindu gods, temples and festivals are still the mainstay of the Balinese religious calendar, with their colourful celebrations a delight for tourists.
Some travellers may be pleased to hear that the important Christian festivals and dates are also recognised across the island.
