/Religion News Articles/ - Portsmouth, VA, August 8, 2008, Jerry K. Shields, Board Certified Clinical Chaplain, Pastoral Counselor for Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in healthcare ministry.

Rev.. Shields has 36 years of professional experience, having spent the last 28 years as an active-duty Navy chaplain serving in various commands and locations around the world. An expert in healthcare ministry, particularly in dealing with patients suffering from alcohol and drug addiction, he devotes his energy to working as a patient care chaplain, educating and training other healthcare chaplains, and conducting marriage enrichment programs for U.S. Navy families. Rev. Shields is proud of his association with Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, the U.S. Navy's largest naval medical center in terms of population and patient beds, and the center for training Navy chaplains for Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).

A Board-Certified Clinical Chaplain and Pastoral Counselor, Rev. Shields received his Master of Divinity from Drew University in 1971 and his Master of Sacred Theology from Yale University in 1984. He is the convener of the Hampton Roads chapter of the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy, an Ordained Elder of the West Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church, and a chaplain for the East Coast Navy Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program. He also sits on the board of directors of the Virginia Chaplains' Association, from which position he hopes to oversee the training of more civilian clergymen to become hospital chaplains, especially in the State of Virginia.
